Call me crazy, but I would think in a country of 350+ million, we’d be able to find a more palatable GOP candidate to run for President. Here’s my take on things: Newt Gingrich isn’t “transformational” as he likes to describe himself. The only thing he seems to transform are versions of his personal history (not to mention wives) to suit his needs. Mitt Romney is a fine businessman who has far more wins than losses on his balance sheet – but there’s something about him I don’t buy. He just doesn’t seem genuine. I like him, but. And that seems to be what a lot of people say; “I like him, but…”
I wish Mitt had the intestinal fortitude to support a woman’s right to make medical decisions about her own body – like he used to. But, he’s just too afraid the right wing of the GOP will abandon him. Well let’s be honest, they don’t like him anyway. And they won’t vote for him. They were never going to vote for him. He’s going to lose votes on this and other social issues anyway – so he may as well support more moderate positions on them. His net gain in independents, Blue Dog Democrats, and moderate Republicans such as myself is going to be far more than his net loss among right wing conservatives – there are a lot more of us when we combine the three voting blocks! As for Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, I’m sure they have the best interest of the country at heart. Really, I’m sure of it. 100%. And that’s all I can say about them – because, well, they have the best interest of the country at heart.
So, all the qualified GOP candidates, the good, reasonable, moderate people like my two favorites Tom Coburn and Chuck Hagel don’t run. They know better. They don’t want to be flayed by the press nor do they want their families to be subjected to media vivisection. I don’t blame them. Neither would I.
And that leaves us with the GOP candidates we have now.

Oklahoma abortion law: NOT OK. So listen up women. You are ALL insulted by this law for you are all deemed incapable of making life-changing decisions for yourselves.

“Calling all Women.” Republicans. Tea Partiers. Coffee partiers. Democrats. Indies. Yooo Hoooo. Where is your outrage? Did you somehow miss the news that the state of Oklahoma now requires every woman seeking an abortion to first undergo an ultrasound? ALL women should be incensed that a group of middle-aged, white men (a generalization – but the actual ages and races of the lawmakers bear this great majority out) has decided that even if you have been raped or are the victim of incest, you must see and hear a very detailed description of the fetus in your womb.

Talk about an invasion of privacy. Apparently, this holier-than-thou group of lawmakers has deemed women unfit to make a decision that will impact every single aspect of their lives. Noooo, we need the dogmatic legislators of morality to tell us what is best for us. “There there little lady, why aren’t you a pretty little thing, let me pressure you into carrying that fertilized egg to term so I can abandon both of you once you have given birth to a child no-one wants. You won’t be entitled to education, health, or any government sponsored assistance because we’re cutting back on all those “Socialist” programs. But by golly, you must bring that fetus to term so that it and you can suffer needlessly for the rest of time.”

Even better in this new law, if the doctor performing the ultrasound notices that the fetus has a severe disability, he doesn’t have to tell you about the birth defect; so your informed decision might not be! It’s totally his decision, his sense of morality and religious convictions, that will determine whether or not to inform you about the health of the fetus in your womb. So much for the Hippocratic oath! Disinformation, or worse, omission is a far cry from “first, do no harm.”

Preaching to women about the sanctity of life – when you abandon that very same life as soon as it actually arrives on the scene is the very essence of hypocrisy. If every life were truly precious, OK lawmakers would ensure that the lives already living and breathing were fed, clothed, educated and insured. Strong-arming a woman into birthing a child she cannot properly take care of – and the state refuses to support – is a moral crime far worse than abortion. It is sentencing two lives to a miserable hell on earth. Shame on you OK. This isn’t about religion. It’s about power. And once again, women have been bamboozled into thinking that limiting a right to choose is about protecting unborn children. It’s not. If the law were about protecting the unborn, then every legislator who voted for this would also have voted to properly fund the teaching of effective birth control methods which would do far more to prevent abortions than this over-reaching law. Nay, nay, my fellow females, this law is purely about limiting women’s power to make their own choices about their own lives.

Women of America, if you’re not wise enough to be insulted by a law that deems you incapable of making your own decisions, then perhaps you deserve to have your rights trampled upon. “There there little lady.”

I’ve had it up to here with the Planned Parenthood bashers around the country.
What do these right-wing, fiscal conservatives who continually and loudly preach that we need to reduce domestic spending on welfare and other entitlement programs not understand about babies costing lots of money?
Planned Parenthood, not the government, not virulently (not to mention violently) anti-abortion organizations including the Pro-Life Rescue League and Operation Rescue, is about the only group out there that is actually saving taxpayers money by reducing these very expensive social welfare and health care programs!
According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, teen pregancies cost taxpayers close to $10 Billion, yes, BILLION, per year.
Teen childbearing costs to the public can be broken down to include:
*$2 billion in increased public sector health care costs.
*$2.3 billion in increased child welfare costs.
*$2.1 billion in increased costs of incarceration.
*$2.9 billion in lost revenue due to lower taxes paid by the children of teen mothers over their own adult lifetimes as a result of lower education and earnings.
It’s economics people. Dollars and cents. Cha-ching. The costs of unplanned and unwanted pregnancies are breaking the bank – which is already completely overdrawn due to tax cuts for the very wealthy and two unfunded wars.
Face it, kids are having sex. They are having a LOT of sex. Rich, poor, black, white, from public shools, from parochial schools, from private schools – they’re fornicating!
So, let’s get religion out of this economic discussion. We can’t afford to pay for unwanted children. As it is now, we can’t afford to pay for the education and health care of the wanted ones. Planned Parenthood needs more funding – not less. Because frankly, the pain of childbirth is excruciating to my wallet.

<img data-attachment-id='378' data-orig-size='450,450' data-liked='0'width="150" height="150" src="http://indignet.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/warrior-ii.jpg?w=150&h=150" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="Yoga Warrior Pose" title="Yoga Warrior Pose" />
I’ve been kinda quiet lately for a reason. I’ve been so filled with inner harmony and serenity after discovering Hot Yoga last month, I haven’t been irritated enough to rant about anything. Here’s what’s great about Hot Yoga:
1) At $79 a month for unlimited Hot Yoga sessions, it is far cheaper than therapy and/or Prozac!
2) The 105+ degree, quiet, dark yoga studio is not only calming and peaceful to be in, the profuse sweating and exercise combinations have eliminated those little flappy arm “wave” wings in under a month. My rear end has returned to it’s previous elevation. My thighs are like rocks. And you’ll just have to believe me when I tell you my abs, yes MY ABS, have re-appeared after spending years going incognito as “baby fat!”
3) The feeling of deep relaxation one enjoys during and after class cannot be beat – legally.
SO, what’s the downside? (There’s only one!)
As of three days ago, there’s a large buffoon in WAY TOO SHORT shorts (more like a thong) with really bad B.O. who insists on setting up his mat near mine for some reason. The smell is bad enough. Talk about distracting one from peaceful thoughts! Add in the constant tugging and “re-arranging” of man parts that are being squeezed into wedgie shorts that would snugly fit, well, me; it’s enough to put the cabash on all possibility of relaxation. Did I mention that he envisions himself a yoga master and feels no compunction to follow the teacher in the positions the rest of the class is practicing? Aaaaargh.
So, we’ve got B.O., miniscule shorts that must be adjusted ad nauseum to return testicles and what-not to a somewhat covered state, and, the topper, practicing his own shaky and off-balance yoga positions when the teacher is instructing us in the correct positions!
One month of pure calm and joy has been ruined by three straight days of this lunkhead who does not wear enough deodorant or clothing.
Deep breath in. Deep breath out. Deep breath in. Deep breath out. Not to worry. I will alter my yoga schedule to accomodate his! We won’t be practicing at the same times from here on out. I will simply change my behavior – with a smile. If you know me, you will know that a miracle has occured here! But with the daily practice of Hot Yoga, remaining pleasant in the face of B.O., dangling testicles, and boorish behavior is now no sweat.

When did we start calling the bean bag toss “Cornhole?”

Where I grew up in North Carolina, cornhole meant only one thing; it meant whomever got cornholed would have trouble sitting for a few days.

I picked up the paper this morning and saw a half-page article on the sport of cornholing and simply shuddered to think about those poor children that were pictured playing the game.

So I went to Wikipedia to find out more. Here are two of the game’s popular terms:

Dirty bag:
A bag that is on the ground or is hanging off the board touching the ground.[4]

Hooker:
A bag hitting the board and hooking or curving around a blocker and going in the hole.[3]

Now really, those two descriptions of play action don’t bring to mind an innocent bean bag toss, do they? This is clearly a game for adults. Children should not be allowed to even watch cornholing – let alone play with the equipment. Get those kids some BEAN BAGS for heaven’s sake.

I’m just saying…

Personal space. I want it. Not a lot. Just a few inches. Is this such a hard concept for people to grasp?
Today, I had my yearly mammogram. I asked for the first appointment of the day so I wouldn’t have to wait for everyone else to have their breasts smashed every which way to Sunday. As the first patient of the morning, I had the waiting room all to myself. For a nanosecond. Another woman came in and plopped herself right next to me – bumping my elbow off the armrest. (She didn’t say excuse me, but that’s another blog post entirely!). I think her eyes might need to be checked more than her mammary glands. Or her head. This woman was bonkers. Let me clarify: there were NO less than 40 seats in the waiting room and she chose to sit so close to me she knocked my arm off my chair! I hadn’t even undressed yet so I know she wasn’t magnetically drawn to the sheer magnificence of my chest. I don’t have any tattoos she might have wanted to eyeball more closely. There wasn’t a bowl of pistachios sitting on my lap for pre-x-ray communal snacking. No, she just invaded my personal space because she didn’t have the sense to sit at least one chair away! Again, the room was completely empty and there were 38 other seating choices for her to make. That really ticked me off. So lesson of the day: Don’t crowd people in doctors’ waiting rooms; it’s just plain rude. And there’s already enough stress with the impending squeezing and flattening of flesh.
On the good side, the little pasties the technician applied to my ta-tas for focusing purposes (ladies, you know what I’m talking about) had daisies on them – and Bob thought they made a lovely spring outfit when I got home!
***BE SURE TO HAVE A YEARLY MAMMOGRAM LADIES.***

Ya got it? That’s the question I heard from THREE helpful male employees of Ollie’s while struggling to carry an 8-foot carpet through the aisles, up to the cash register, and finally out to my car last week. The dog had peed on the front hall carpet once again. So, off to Ollie’s Discount Store I drove to just replace the thing rather than scrub and attempt to deodorize it as usual.
I found the perfect 8′ round, wool, traditional Wilton – under no less than a dozen other choices. I pressed the “Get Assistance in the Carpet Department” button and waited. And waited. And waited. Yep, you guessed it. Me, myself, and I rolled and heaved the other carpets off the stack until we finally got to the right one. As I’m hoisting my choice onto my 5′3″ inch, slender frame’s shoulder, a 20-something, 6′ + tall male employee arrives and asks me, “Ya’ got it?” “Yes, thank you,” I manage to wheeze out. (Well, yeah, I’ve got it NOW; I’ve done all the heavy lifting.) I make my way to the check-out line, panting and puffing along the narrow aisles barely avoiding multiple collisions with lighted Christmas Tree, Reindeer and North Pole displays. Another male employee – a bagger mind you – not anyone minding the cash register calls to me, “Ya got it?” Again, same question to the short, small-boned woman lugging an 8-ft carpet through the store. I nod my head yes; didn’t have the energy to whisper out a “Yes, thanks.” The third employee, the MANAGER of the store (easily 300 lbs and well over 6′ tall – a burly, beefy, linebacker sort) who has watched me struggle through the check-out process yells over to me, “Ya GOT it?” He, like the other two men, made NO attempt to actually remove the weighty burden from my shoulder. Their “effort” on my behalf was purely vocal! Calling out “Ya’ got it?” to a woman lugging a large roll of carpet is not being a gentleman in any way. It is simply more proof that good manners in this country have been, well, irretrievably trampled.

That’s it. I’ve had it. I have HAAAAADDDDDD it! This is what my sister-in-law Joan says when she’s ticked off. You can tell she’s boiling by the drawn out “haaaaddd.” And you’d best get out of the way; she’s a thrower! Well, today, I’ve had it. I’ve haaaaaaadddddddddd it. Here’s why:
In this morning’s paper, there’s a small article about the Dress Like A Zombie Contest held yesterday at the local mall’s Barnes and Noble store. Families were encouraged to participate in hopes of winning tickets to “Evil Dead: The Musical!
So, the family of four pictured above (Please note that the children I’m talking about in this post are ages 7 and 9 – not the big, tall, scary teenager on the left!) comes dressed as zombies. The look can only be described as preppy-ghoulish. Blood. Goo. “Latex” facial skin falling off! Dark circles under the eyes. And brightly colored clothes that would be perfectly appropriate at any of the private schools in town. They were the clear winners. Of course, that was before little Caleigh wanted to go to the food court to get something to eat. Nope. No can do.
Way too risky. Mall security would not let the family leave the Barnes and Noble store to enter into the mall. Apparently, they were worried that other mall patrons might be terrified by the zombie characters’ “moaning, groaning or walking like a zombie.” To me though, the real topper comes when the mall manager is asked to explain why the family cannot go to the food court. He said, and I quote syllable for syllable, “How would we identify them if they were to commit a crime?” It’s thinking like this that I find truly scary.

Yummy.

Keep your needles, your feeding tubes, and your ventilator hose off and out of my body.
I have no intention of dying in a hospital hooked up to every blinking, beeping machine invented in the last century. Just give me a big ol’ supply of morphine patches and sleeping pills and send me back to my beautiful farm to die in peace!
Euthanasia is not a dirty word. Just say it out loud a few times. “Youthhh-nnn-asiaaa.” See how nicely it rolls off the tongue? It almost seems like its definition should be “climbing above the clouds in the Himalayas to have tea with young monks.”
OK, now I’m going to break the Zen mood. Ever wonder why our health care system is such an expensive mess? Well, in addition to out of control medical malpractice costs and claim-denying insurance companies, 1% of the population accounts for 35 percent of health care spending. I get this straight from a wise pulmonologist who (every day) visits these 1% – the very old, terminally ill, pitiful few who have absolutely no hope for recovery. He sees these “patients” hooked up to machines, being fed intravenously, defecating on themselves, resuscitated by CPR (often with the added bonus of painful broken ribs) lying in hospital beds for months – even years. They’re called patients – but there’s nothing that medicine can do to cure them or even help them. Medicine is just prolonging their existence. I, for one, do not plan on staying around simply to have my Depends changed or my grilled salmon served through a feeding tube.

The absolute last thing I care to be remembered for is having boobs that hung down so low I could tuck them into my waistband instead of wearing a bra. (May my dear grandmother rest in peace…)

Bring on the hospice care at home. Bring on the hemlock. Bring me a cigar. Just please, don’t bring me any holier-than-thou politicians preaching about the sanctity of my life. They obviously don’t know me!

I’m not really ranting today. I’ve calmed down. But I was certainly ranting yesterday each time I thought I had lost a filling due to hitting a pothole while making my way home from DC on I-95. So, before I take my car in to have the tires re-aligned, I’m going to post my letter to the editor as my Indignet post today. Hope it meets with your approval – even though it is not my typical exasperated venting.

Dear Editor-
Since when did public safety become a liberal or a conservative issue? Our roads and bridges are dangerous. They need to be fixed. Fixing them costs money. Period. Both our gubernatorial candidates need to tell Virginians that a gas tax is needed to fix the roads. It’s not an option. Then, both can resume debating about issues that are actually debatable! Safety is not such an issue. We simply cannot afford NOT to repair our roads and bridges. Because if we don’t, someone is going to get hurt. Or worse. Someone’s child, mom or brother is going to lose control of his or her car after hitting one of our monstrous potholes. Or someone’s loving aunt or favorite granddad is going to be the unlucky driver who just happens to be passing over a rusty or crumbling bridge as it collapses. It’s only a matter of time. And then, whether it was Democratic or a Republican candidate who was neither politically brave enough or sufficiently pragmatic to champion a gas tax to repair our roads, then my fellow Virginians of both parties, we will weep together. And we will have only ourselves to blame.
